Alexandrite
AlexandriteA variety of chrysoberyl (not a beryl) found in Russia, is a talismanic stone which has gained reputation in our time. The stone as found in gem form rarely weighs over from one to three carats, and is characterised by a market pleochromism of a splendid green changing to a beautiful columbine red. It shows green by day, but red by artificial light and was formerly confused  confused with Chrysolite. As red and green are the Russian National colours, the alexandrite has become a great favourite with the Russians, and is looked upon as a stone of good omen in that country.

Amber
AmberIt is perhaps the oldest known gem. In the absolute (sense, amber is neither a stone nor a jewel. Amber, glowing tawny yellow as the Sun, shading light to dark, and having, when processed, smooth, silk-like lustre is a gift to us from another healing agent, the wood of a tree

Amandinus
A variously coloured stone, which enables the wearer of it to solve any question concerning dreams or enigmas.

Amethyst
AmethystThis gem is reckoned among the purple and transparent stones, mixed with a violet colour, emitting rosy sparkles. It is ruled by Jupiter and Mars. The Indian variety is the most precious.. Amethyst changes colour on heating, usually being paler.. Amethyst has been employed in practical and mystical healing since ancient days. Ancients employed amethyst widely as  protective stone favouring it especially for amulets and talismans. Strictly, amethyst should be classed as a semiprecious jewel. Its shades range from deep purple to palest violet, the result of iron and manganese oxide which make up the stone's composition.

A very beautiful stone, its renowned property, alleged by the ancients, was that it prevents drunkness. Some state that the very name means not drunken. The stone not only allegedly being an effective antidote against alcohol, but also counteracting the fumes given off by all apirits and wines. Amethyst would protect all who wore it against over indulgence in all forms of drunkenness. An Amethyst, placed under the tongue, enabled the person to quaff several glasses of strong wine without Intoxication. Those fortunate to own wine glasses or jars made of amethyst might swallow the entire contents without any ill effects.

While the special and traditional virtue of amethyst was the cure of drunkenness, many other qualities were attributed to this stone in the fifteenth century. One of this beautiful stone's virtues was its alleged faculty of changing colour when placed in the vicinity of any kind of poisonous substance. For this reason, of course, it was particularly valued by persons of high rank and those holding public office, who tested their food and drink by holding amthyst rings or amulets close to see whether enemies were attempting to poison them. It preserved soldiers from harm and gave them victory over their enemies and was of great assistance to hunters in the capture of wild animals. Amethyst shared with many other stones the power to preserve the wearer from contagion.

Amethyst promoted chastity, was of benefit to the brain. There was a strong belief in the ability of amethyst to soothe violent and angry passion. It had the power to control evil thoughts, to quicken the intelligence and to render men shrewd in business matters. An Amethyst worn on a person had a sobering effect upon the user over excited by the love-passion. Amethyst, corresponded with good counsel and the planet Mercury and it was dedicated to Mercury.

Physical changes, too, in the body of the wearer reflected by the amethyst, which grew pale and dim at times of threatened sickness, either of mind or body. This stone was also reputed to possess a power of mystical prevision when the owner was in any kind of personal danger, the colour and lustre fading, giving warning of possible treachery or misfortune to come.

Aquamarine
AquamarineIt was one of the sacred stones. The aqamarine has the curious property of gaining brilliancy in artificial light, whereas the saphire behaves in just the opposite manner. Its lordship is assigned to Venus and Mars.

Azurite ( Lapis Linguis )
Azurite ( Lapis Linguis )Azurite and lazurite were probably employed by healers and priests of the ancient. Azurite Is a blue stone being derivative of copper ore. Azurite probably has secret (even sinister) influences since its use is so shrouded in mystery. For many healing substances and gems can become malignant in emanation. If used for the wrong purposes, and in an occult sense, it was probably believed that the less the enlightened knew about this stone's workings the better for them. It is nearly, always found with, or near, malachite. Azurite remains still very much a "stone of mystery". In the psychic field, it has a curious reputation amongst seers and healers when worn on the person by one whose own psychic emanations are in tune with it, it puts the individual in touch with vibrations and forces beyond the plane of matter. Some writers of antiquity said it aided meditation and psychic development, and counselled that it be worn upon the body so that it touched the naked flesh.
