Topaz
The
topaz is said to derive its name from the island Topazian in the
Red Sea. This is a comparatively rare stone, and very unusual one,
having unique and very beautiful colouring. The Topaz, in fact,
is found in Five colours - pink, bIack, white, green
and yellow, but it is of the yellow colour we are concerned here.
Topaz is
not valued so highly as diamond, ruby, emerald
or sapphire. The ancients called it "The Stone of Strength", employing
it widely in healing. In India and Ceylon, it is the saffron-colour
yellow topaz, which is most highly prized for its mystical and
magical powers. The people of these countries say that it will
bring to its owner good health, faculty of wisdom, and assurance
that death will come neither by violence nor suddenly. To the ancient
Egyptians, it symbolised knowledge ,and corresponded with the Sun-god,
giver of life and fertility, because it enlightens. In astrology,
it was ruled by the Sun, subjected to heat, they lose their colour.

Turquoise
The
literature of all nations of antiquity makes mention of this jewel
especially stressing its value as a focussing point for healing
and occult forces, and as a beneficient
and fortunate talisman.More
precious and only available in smaller pieces,
is turquoise. A good turqoise is sky-blue, but it is inclined to
fade. It
is, nevertheless, a fine stone but with a different significance
from either sapphire
or lapis lazuli. It has a colour which emits healing radiation,
the particular shade of greenishblue which characterises this stone
being
very soothing and calming. In medieval and by gone times, this
gem was often employed in the direct treatment. For this reason,
it has
been recommended as a "Eye-Stone" i.e. to be helpful in the treatment
of many diseases peculiar to this organ. When so used, it was the
practice to place the jewel directly upon the eye/eyes, so that
healing power of the stone could be directed and concentrated there.

Zirrcon
It
is represented in a number of different colours. Mathura diamond
is the name given to a colourless specimen. Jargon or Jargoon generally
refers to the yellow kind-jacinth or hyacinth to the orange; malacon
to the brown, while zircon in the restricted sense is used for
green variety.

Agapis
This
is a yellow stone, so called because it promotes love or charity.
It cures stings and venomous bites, by being dipped in water
and rubbed over the wound. |
Agates or Achates
Morbodius
tells that the Agate, according to reports, was first found on
the banks of a river, and was named after that river. Agate was
used by the Magi of Persia for averting
tempests. It not only gives vigour
to him who wears it, but also endows him
with grace, conversation and good manners and avert tempests and
lightning. The Agate possesses some wonderful virtues, for
its wearer was guarded from all dangers, was enabled to vanquish
all terrestrial obstacles and was endowed with a bold heart; this
latter prerogative was presumably the secret of his success. It
is said also to dispose to solitude, and secure favour of princes.
Good against the biting of scorpions or serpents, soothes the mind,
drives away contagious air.
